Flower Care
Flower Care
A few small rituals to keep your blooms looking their best, from the first day to the last petal.
Fresh flowers ask very little of you. Give them a clean drink, a cool spot, and a snip every couple of days, and they will pay you back for a week or more. Here is exactly how we keep ours looking their best, straight from the studio.
Make Them Last
-
Unwrap and give them room
Slip off the wrap as soon as they arrive and let the stems relax. A little breathing space helps every bloom open on its own schedule.
-
Trim on a diagonal
Cut about an inch off each stem on a sharp diagonal with clean scissors. The angled cut drinks more water and keeps the stem from sitting flat on the vase bottom.
-
Fresh water and the flower food
Fill a clean vase with cool water and stir in the little packet we tuck in the box. It feeds the blooms and keeps the water clear. No packet handy? A splash of lemon-lime soda works in a pinch.
-
Find the cool, bright spot
Keep them out of direct sun, off the heat vent, and away from the fruit bowl. Ripening fruit gives off a gas that ages flowers fast.
-
Refresh every couple of days
Every two to three days, pour out the old water, rinse the vase, top up with fresh, and give the stems another small trim. This one habit does the most to buy you extra days.
Bloom by Bloom
Roses
Strip the lower leaves so none sit in the water, recut every few days, and they will open slowly and beautifully.
Tulips
Tulips keep growing in the vase and lean toward the light. Turn the vase daily and keep the water shallow.
Lilies
Once the buds open, gently pinch off the orange pollen tips. It keeps the petals and your tablecloth spotless.
Ranunculus & Anemones
Delicate, papery stems love clean, cool water. Change it often and keep them out of any warm sun.
Sunflowers
Thirsty and heavy-headed. Give them a tall vase for support and top up the water every day.
Hydrangea
If the head droops, float the whole bloom in cool water for twenty minutes. It drinks through the petals and perks right back up.
